The Convair 240 was designed for 40 pax. Not 100. The plane was built for Western Airlines. Not Eastern. Skynyrd's plane could haul 24 Pax and 2 pilots, after conversion. The fuel gauges were working, good enough. Several survived pax stated that both gauges, fuel gauges, were reading about a quarter, after the blotched take off, outta Greenville. A quarter tank was close to fuel onboard. Here is what I learned about airplane fuel gauges. E means your outta Fn Gas. Land.... I calculated fuel load by weight, as the 2 gauges read. My other 4 tanks did not have gauges. It is not hard to calculate fuel onboard, when your damn life depends on it. Not to mention others lives.

Thanks for posting this. I knew of this interview, but had never heard it. Stern’s knowledge of Skynyrd is pretty bad considering his early years were as a DJ at several Rock stations in the 70s. In fact one of his early gigs was at a station here in Connecticut, WCCC in Hartford.
