Guitarist Rickey Medlocke says he promised he’d be there for Lynyrd Skynyrd “until the very last note in ‘Free Bird’ was struck.” He recently talked to Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Music Editor Monica Hooper about his time with the band and the current tour with ZZ Top and Uncle Kracker, stopping July 28 at the Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion in Rogers.

Any bets as to who replaces Rickey when he strikes that last note?

It is quite telling, and downright sad, when a so-called musician prefers to invest all of his playing time, playing another song writer/performer's, music instead of his very own composures. What would drive a 'Musician" to play in a cover band when he/she has "original" material that they themselves wrote and recorded.

Yeah, it’s a shame when a musician completely devoted himself to playing another musician’s music, and doesn’t put more effort into writing memorable songs of his own.
It would be different if he kept working on other songs while also playing other musicians’ songs on the side, which is exactly what’s happening with me, actually.
I have a friend (whose name I’ll keep private) who’s been in the music business since the 70’s. He’s has played with the likes of Rusty Day, Jimmy Buffett, Ted Nugent, Gregg Allman, and more, and he’s written several songs throughout the years, almost none of which have ever been released. Since late-2022, he’s been helping me become a songwriter and better musician, and that’s when he actually gave me permission to play a lot of the songs he wrote, one of which was originally meant to be given to Ronnie Van Zant himself (but Ronnie died before my friend ever got to tell him about it)! I’m trying to write more songs of my own, and eventually get to recording them (once I have the right cables and things for it, since I have a Tascam digital mixing board), as well as maybe three or four songs of my friend’s (including the one for Ronnie), for a demo tape. Lyrically, I do fine when it comes to songwriting, but the instrumental side of it is where I have a bit of a harder time. I think I know where I want to go with it, though…….
