I'm about to head over to see the Artimus Band tonight in Richmond. I'll be happy if these things happen.
-Artimus doesn't drone on about made up stories between songs.
-The tickets say "A tribute to Ronnie Van Zant" That's a hell of a statement. The band better bring the heat, saying that.
I'm bringing my wife and she gets tired of hearing my southern rock ALL THE TIME. She loves the music so don't be aembarrassing.
-I'm a die hard fan, so sign my 2 albums and it'll be a perfect event.
I'll give you guys a report on the show, of course.

Luckily I have this day off as I'm a bit hungover. After ditching the bud light, I'm struggling to find a brew that doesn't make my head pound in the AM.
Playing at the "tin pan" which is a bar and grill/ music hall. Basically a Applebee's with a stage. It was decorated nicely and setup with tables and chairs. Photos of bands who have previously performed at the venue were displayed throughout, Dickey Betts, Pure prairie league, are a couple I spotted.
We were seated far right of stage at our own table. Basically backstage view. This was perfect because I could focus on Artimus. There was literally only a small piece of stage and Artimus drum set besides me.
I swallow down a free bird mixed cocktail (that's gotta answer the hangover question) as the bands walk on theme plays. I always say Saturday night special is the ultimate opener, and that's what they opened with. It was a swift kick in the nuts with a big shot of adrenalin. Loved it, sounded raw, loud, and tight. Like I want it.
They move on to "three steps" and my wife asked me why they don't put a cowboy hat on the bald headed bass man, as he don't look right 😂. I agreed but they played the songs correctly, moving into Curtis Lowe, swamp music, all sounded great. I'll also add that the singing sounded like RVZ. At least sounded way closer than JVZ.
Around 3/4 through the show they played every mothers son, which was really nice to hear. They've nailed every song and the crowd is soaking in the great hits and a couple deep cuts of skynyrd.
After that things get a bit sketchy, I'll explain.
The singer starts to promote the new APB album coming out soon. Then into promoting the SS movie explaining the next song they're going to play will be from the sound track. I took that opportunity to buy "my grass is blue" t shirt and a beer. I'm back in my seat as they finish up the soundtrack tune.
They go into what's your name and I start noticing the band doing weird stuff. I have a eye for detail and the bands stage presence wasn't the same. I don't think Artimus was playing fully and the guitar players were kinda doing things to hide their playing.
I think they piped in a lot of music and halfway played the instruments the last few songs-what's your name, Alabama, and free bird.
It especially became apparent when the bald bass man would stand right beside Artimus drum kit blocking any view of him actually playing. The solo at the end of free bird was obviously played from the studio album because it was to clean and note for note. I'm still thinking over this but something wasn't right with the band whenever I returned from buying the tshirt. I bet nobody but me in the crowd sniffed that out.
I also noticed that bullets wasn't played very good. So I know the band was playing. At some point something went wrong 😕 because they were blazing good until the SS sound track song. At the end of the night I talked to Artimus. He was awesome. I told him one of the album was my dad's and my introduction to becoming a skynyrd fan. He said that's awesome! He replied, God bless em' is he still with us? I said he sure is, he's baby sitting his grandkids right now. Artimus says that's beautiful man, I love stories like that! He asked why dont we write this out to your Dad, since it was his old record and you can surprise him with it? Great idea, so he signed my stuff and gave me a drumb stick on the sly, which I wasn't expecting. I gave Artimus a hug and told him I loved him and got outta there. Forgot to get a picture with him.
I noticed Artimus can't hear for shit, too.

Sounds like you had an awesome time! But you know the old saying... photos or it didn't happen! Ha! As far as band changing to possibly recorded material for end of show is interesting if that is what happened. And if so then we gotta consider some possibilities for why... To me 2 things pop up first... 1)Artimus told me decades ago, back in mid 80's when he was still fairly young and in shape, that playing drums for him for a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert was very grueling physically. He said the end of FreeBird for him was like running a 20 mile marathon full speed to the finish line. So point is, even in the 1980's he was having issues with having to live up to that song every night. And how old is Artimus today? In his 70's? Is anyone surprised Artimus would let infallible recorded performance take over where age and injuries cause the human to maybe not be able to carry the full load any longer? 2)I have to also consider Artimus leg injury. This always causes him pain. And playing drums only makes it hurt even more.
Artimus never fully recovered from the motorcycle accident shown above that kept him from playing drums in the RCB. At the same time the RCB was needing a drummer, Artimus was recovering from :
"Pyle was forced to drop out after breaking his leg in 21 places following a collision with a drunk driver."
His bone could never recover. So from the knee to the ankle he has a steel pin in there about the size of one of his drum sticks.
A steel pin rounded on each end for weight load carrying.
And if anyone is paying attention, Artimus right leg is about one inch shorter than his left and he has to have shoes custom made to adjust for the difference, and he tends to put his weight onto his one good leg to take the weight off the forever injured right leg that always hurts. And like I said, playing drums makes it hurt even more.
And I suspect that if he and his band makes a shift from live to recorded, that these top 2 choices are probably the most likely reason why.
It is more important for the fans to hear quality all the way to the end, rather than an injured aging man- who is human after all.

We had a blast, and what you said about the foot makes perfect sense. I noticed he had on a special type boot on when I was chatting him up. I didn't ask about it, I assume that's from his bike injury. Really cool dude.
I just thought it was worth pointing out.
I also saw the RVZ look a like guy. I've seen him at a few different southern rock shows in Virginia. The guys name escapes me, possibly in a tribute band here in VA.
Also Artimus will be 75 in July WOW!

I saw him last year with my elbows on the stage. Definitely no tracks and nothing "fishy" going on. Not saying you are wrong, but it didn't happen when I saw them. By the way, the bald guy on bass is badass as is everyone else in the band. They bring it and there is no BS at all in the show. Artimus says a little about RVZ and the old band at the end, and that is it. The rest is just the songs. And they are tight......no awkward showboating. If you want hats, costumes, and wigs there are plenty of other bands out there you can go see.

If you want hats, costumes, and wigs there are plenty of other bands out there you can go see. An inside baseball way to tell if a band CAN use tracks: If the drummer does NOT have in-ear monitors, there's no chance of using tracks convincingly. The timekeeper has to be able to synch with them and typically at least fake giving cues to start songs. If AP wears in-ear monitors, then they CAN use tracks. A lot of drummers use earplugs, so it can be a challenge sometimes to see whether it's in-ears... Wires from the ears are a dead giveaway, but it's also likely that they are using in-ears if you see several members of the band are wearing the same ear buds. Even many decent bar bands are using in-ears now. Stage noise is a real problem and in-ears help with that BIG time. Just using in-ears does NOT mean they use tracks, but not having in-ears means they definitely can't pull it off without a lot of "phasing" and other issues that gives it away. Low-production shows would have someone on the stage cue the tunes electronically, while bigger productions have crew to do it. Something to think about when you are watching a band play....

They also did an amazing rendition of Tuesdays gone With a dobro that was just incredible. I can't be for certain about my suspension, but I do have a few videos and pictures. Sometime tomorrow I'll figure out how to post all that here, and we can see there's anything there. I'll probably just upload the video on YouTube to post here? Anyway I'll figure it out tomorrow frynds.

Artie is stopping by the house next month. He is playing a couple of joints fairly close to the farm. We are going to cook a few steaks and drink a couple beers, before the show. The venue is giving me a couple of long tables. I'll probably take 10 peeps or so, to the show. Artimus and I have not seen each other since October 16th, 1977. But we have talked about 100 times in the last couple of years. It's going to be interesting. We pulled a thing or 2 off.

Artimus is a vegetarian. Hope those are soy steaks! Ha!
One day at Allen's studio Artimus and I order pizza delivery. We ordered the pizza half vegetarian and half with sausage. Artimus found a piece of sausage on his side of the pizza and blew his stack.

And maybe even a little chicken as well. But I can tell you how to make Artimus a super happy camper real fast. Go down to a produce stand and buy some fresh common veggies. Carrots. Broccoli. And his favorite is artichoke. And anything that grows with roots toss in there. Fresh mushrooms. Squash. Snap peas. Stuff like that, but especially artichoke. Take all the veggies home and rinse. Pull out the steamer and gently steam over low to medium and leave on counter on low all day kind of thing and he goes to the steamer and pulls food out and eats it as he wants to. That is basically how he did it at Allen's studio when I first met him in 1985. We used to go to a produce stand on corner of Cassette and Blanding on north wedge shape corner I think and walk around buying fresh produce and he had a steamer on the counter in the small kitchen at studio steaming away.
I had never eaten like that. And I had never had steamed artichoke either. So he showed me how to eat it. And I liked it. And I have not had it since. lol maybe.
If you have this all ready for him, I bet he would be a happy camper and need nothing else except drink. Hot sake is a favorite and beer. Never knew him to be a hard drinker, but whiskey sometimes. Beer first. Hot sake with sushi. Back then his favorite was smoked salmon skin roll.
Oh and depending on how long he is around, I'd have 3 or 4 artichokes at minimum in steamer and less of the other stuff. And his drink of choice back then was a V8 - or beer.
Another weird thing he did was we would buy some grapes with seeds in them and I always spit the seeds out because sometimes they can be bitter and I really like sweet grape ya know? Well, Artimus is a cat of a different breed. He was throwing down seeded grapes as fast as seedless. And crunching away on the seeds and removing none of them. I think he did about the same with watermelon too. Today I crunch a few watermelon seeds myself. So fresh fruit too. Fresh strawberries was a favorite.
I know this is 38 year old diet information, but I would bet you, its still very close to this. And keep in mind, he is a light steamer. He was of the mind that foods are best raw. I agree with him. So he was not steaming on high cooking the crap out of stuff. He was more or less steaming lightly over long period of time.
This is why Ronnie said we keep him in a cage and feed him raw meat is because they made fun of Artimus and his diet and thought and possibly believed he did not eat enough protein because of his diet and that maybe it was affecting his playing.
And because of that someone said the band members should hold him down and stuff burgers down his throat as their solution.
I snapped these photos from back then. I was looking at them to see if he had a beer in his hands because I forgot what he drank and I want to say Michelob, but don't quote me on that one. Sorry photos are watermarked, but when sold on ebay I want my credit and my cut and I never get it soooooo.....
I just noticed in background of this next image some of Leon's bass rig is missing meaning it was out on a gig when this photo was taken and not back in its place for use in Allen's studio. That gear was doing double duty. Triple duty. Multiple bands going on at same time revolving out of here. LSII project, Vision, ACB had just broken up months before, Leon had Max-Nix project with Robert Nix and you can see his clear kick drum Artimus borrowed to try out. Lynyrd Skynyrd and Atlanta Rhythm Section drums and ACB and RCB drums all set up together at the same time in this studio! And in use too.
And its driving me nuts but there was other bands I can't recall. I want to say TimePiece. Anyone got that album? Please share!
Max Paul Schwensen from Nashville was other part of Max Nix project leon was in.
In these first two photos Artimus and I are setting things up inside studio and cleaning things out. Here he is sitting in a rocking chair on his 1977 Street Survivors tour custom made drum riser of solid steel frame with heavy plywood deck and made in two pieces like 8 feet long by 4 feet wide and two of them lay side by side for an 8 foot by 8 foot square drum riser heavy as hell. It was too much for Artimus and I. It would take a good three or 4 strong men to man handle that sucker. God I would not want to roadie that thing every day! Hell no. Thankfully, here it was set it and leave it.
Artimus is holding his Marines dress sword and wearing a 1985 Johnny Van Zant band's last album Van Zant recorded by Rodney Mills at Studio One in Doraville. And here Artimus wearing their hat. But only in Jacksonville. You would never see him wear this hat anywhere else. At this location, He worked for Van Zants. He was Van Zant's drummer. Van Zants went with Jax westside music and Lacy and Marion's house was right down the street a few blocks. So Van Zant it is. But only here. If we walked out the front door and went to a club say in St. Augustine. The hat would stay here.
