Greg has passed on now, but his legacy lives on in Florida where he spent much of his life playing guitar. One of the most enjoyable bands I ever heard Greg play in was Artimus band APB. We had Artimus on drums, Tim Lindsey on bass, and Mike Estes on guitar and vocals and Greg Baril on guitar and vocals.
I spent many long hours with Greg sometimes drinking scotch until the sun came up and I miss him dearly. In this thread I'd like to post some videos with Greg... and this first one is a complete show of what appears to be just Greg, Artimus and Tim getting it started. I have not watched it all so no telling if anyone else steps in later on.
One of Greg's trademarks was his hair. Sometimes it stood ten feet tall. Seriously though, he used to wear his hair standing almost straight up.
Greg worked with numerous musicians and was even a mentor to a young Derek Trucks as show in following image of a 9 year old Derek Trucks on stage with Greg Baril getting schooled on guitar... long before Derek's Allman Brothers days...
Not sure who is on the left, but the short kid is Derek and Greg is on the right standing next to him.
A full live performance like this one is a great way to get to know Greg as he really was. A Stevie Ray Vaughan trained blues guitarist.
Skip forward and start listening at 14:17 when Greg starts in on one of his signature songs... I get the goosebumps hearing and watching Greg approach this opening slowly... Amazing. So glad this recording exists! And the sound and mix is pretty good too since camera is a ways from the stage.
This is a great look at Greg and Tim Lindsey and Artimus! The solo bands Skynyrd fans missed out on! Well, not all of us! I spent a lot of time around this particular APB band. Best APB band ever! Take the nucleus of this band, Greg, Tim, Artimus and Mike Estes, and then add in other players like Sammy on drums and Randall Hall and others and it only got better and better!
I am going to have to edit out some MP3's of this video! Can't let some of this Greg Baril slip on by! Since he is gone now, this type of video is all we have left...
RIP Greg!
One thing to notice about the band and Artimus in particular is how in the beginning they are playing down. Artimus is just kind of following along here. No explosive drumming. Kind of like he is saving his energy for later on... its a buildup type of thing. Artimus is playing mink coat drumming here. Playing simply to give a beat to Greg. Follow Greg.

GREGORY BARIL OBITUARY
Gregory W. Baril, 63, died on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Hospital in La Plata, MD. Born in Wauregan, CT August 27, 1955, he was the son of the late Edgar A. Baril, who died in November, 2007, and the late Marjorie (Place) Baril, who died in April, 1983.
Greg is survived by his two daughters, Erin Sanson and Meaghan Willhite, and former wife, Joanne Bigelow of Bonita Springs, FL. By his brothers; Brian and wife Linda, Rodney and wife Annie and Tom and wife Danni. He also leaves behind four granddaughters, Leni, Vera, Micah and Mila.
Greg was most known as an accomplished blues guitarist and vocalist. After graduating Killingly High School in 1973, in Killingly, CT he considered attending a music school before opting for the road. First with the Stovall Brown Blues Band. He later played with the George T. Gregory Band and then the Zaitchik Brothers Band before joining the Shaboo All Stars where he played with Jeff Pevar, a long time childhood friend and musician.
He opened for such acts as the late B.B King and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was quoted saying that he learned about the blues from going to the Shaboo Inn "since they used to sneak me in". The rest is history. After decades of creating his legacy in the New England music scene, he moved to Florida where his music career flourished. He played in his own band, The Greg Baril Band.
He was also a member of the APB Band, sharing the stage with Artimus Pyle, former drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Timmy Lindsey of Molly Hatchet, Greg was also a teacher, mentor and inspiration to Derek Trucks. Beyond a musician,
Greg was a loving father and friend. He was known for his infectious laugh and sense of humor. He loved to fish, and cook. He was full of passion with anything and everything he did.
Anyone who was lucky enough to hear him play could see that he put his heart and soul into every lick. He had a way of silencing a crowded room as people watched in awe. Greg touched the lives of many, even if it was just one song, he was never forgotten. In the words of Jimi Hendrix, Even castles made of sand, fall into the sea, eventually.
The family will be hosting a memorial service honoring Greg's memory on April 7, 2019 from 2pm-5pm at the Colonial Quarter located at 43 St George St. St Augustine, FL 32084 Published by St. Augustine Record from Mar. 9 to Apr. 3, 2019.
