Time to see how well some of you are reading this forum... or, just how well you know your Skynyrd...
What bands, artists, and series of events got Artimus his job in Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1974?

Referral from Charlie Daniels started it all I believe.

Referral from Charlie Daniels started it all I believe. That was actually step 2! What was step 1?

Yes!~ Step 1 was Artimus was living in Carolinas and knew the MTB members and played with them in and around their hometown area. But the MTB was already established and had drummers and no place for Artimus.
But one day Charlie Daniel's drummer up and quit on him and left old Charlie in a bind and his buddies in MTB recommended Artimus to Charlie.
Artimus told me that Charlie paid for him to get on a bus and come out to Nashville to meet him. Artimus said that as soon as the bus arrived there old Charlie was waiting on him at the bus stop and as he climbed down the stairs and got off the bus he ran into a grim faced Charlie who felt really bad about the whole situation as he told Artimus, look man, I am sorry you came out here for nothing. My drummer has come back and I don't need you right now, but let me pay your bus fair back home and here is some extra money for your time and trouble.
Charlie felt really bad about how he had done Artimus completely unintentional.
But not long after Charlie and Skynyrd had some tour dates together and Ronnie told Charlie he was needing another drummer and Charlie recommended Artimus in part out of guilt- after not even having heard him play or anything! Just felt guilty about the bus ride to Nashville and back.
But when Charlie gave his recommendation to Ronnie, that was it. Ronnie did not need to know anything else. And so the audition was set up I think in Atlanta where Artimus met some Skynyrd band members- and I am not sure who all went to the audition, as some of you may know that story better.
But I do recall Artimus telling me that he drove down in his I think VW hippie van and that it broke down just before arriving at the location of the audition. And Artimus said he left the van right there in the road pushed off to the side and out of the way and he unloaded his drums on the street and had to literally carry them and run them a block or two to the audition piece by piece. It took a couple of back and forth trips to get all of his drums.
So that is the story I learned from Artimus in bits and pieces over the years and let's see what else y'all can add to it!

Artimus definitely has some cool stories about himself. Charlie Daniel’s a class act, always enjoyed interviews with him. RIP Charlie.
