A little more to it...
The pilots switched off the generator in the rear of the plane around 5,000 feet to 7,000 feet and when they did that, they lost power to the hydraulic pumps used to make steering and flight controls easier- sort of like losing power steering in your car. With the power off those pumps and no hydraulic help, those pilots were white knuckle flying and using all of their man power muscle to try and fly that plane, and they were kind of locked into a downward turn as engines and hydraulic pumps stopped working.
Houston air traffic control told them to turn around and go back to McComb airport which the idiots had just passed and were 9 miles out when they lost power in the turn around.

Tragedies are almost always death by a thousand cuts. No pun intended. It damn sure seems like most tragic plane accidents It's a combination of a panic and simple mistakes and or equipment failure.

It was probably more like 5 minutes I'm guessing, it went down pretty fast because McCreary was trying to land it in a field he'd picked out. Obviously he misjudged the glide and rate of descent... Nailed It !!!! Glide and Rate... Whatever you do, don't F... that up. McCreary hit the 1st tree at 97 feet and at a 5 degree, nose down attitude. Granted, I would take the field over the pine forest. If in fact, I had put myself in that situation. But, that landing in the field was going to be nasty, regardless. McCreary had no means to pick the nose up, so he likely would have been at 8 degrees nose down, or worse, on impact. That is very ugly. This guy had limited, but sufficient light, to see his options. 1st, personally, I would have landed on I-55 and turned my 4 ways on..lol. Sorry about the inconvenience MS Hiway Patrol. But if I was absolutely determined to crash the plane, I would have blown the gear down, forced the flaps out and landed on Johnny Motts Gravel Rd. The As....e had enough rudder to accomplish that, 30 seconds before he drove into the tree's. Mccreary was so obsessed with following the McComb localizer. Right into the damn trees. It took him 10 minutes, but, the plane was lined up on the runway. Only problem, the numbers were 8 miles in front of him. So Sad. Cagey, I overlooked your post about killing power...... True. But why kill all power so far in advance? You can kill power with (1) pull. And kill all of it. I have never understood why those 2.....s were so hell bent on finding a spot to crash- VS- a place to land... If your damn engines are flaming, and your crossing roads, land on it..... McCreary had radio 2 dialed up to the Mccomb localizer. He knew damn well he was 10 miles out when he pulled power. If your not going to make the airport, pull off and park it, where you can. And not in the woods for heavens sake... The bare minimum in very elementary basic airmanship was not there. "OK class, before we learn what makes a plane fly, like air and wings, First let me say, if ya cant make the airport, make your own... Don't stick it in the woods. It never works out favorably.." .

Only pumps that spin backwards are in Nashville
A 3-Phase pump can spin backwards, it still pumps water, not much. You switch a lead in the breaker box to reverse rotation
Town of Preston water supply was down called me in to replace 25-horse power pump $$$$$$$ dollar signs danced through my head, I was going to make over 10 G's for a day's work, I got there reversed the rotation. Went from ten thousand down to 285.00 real quick. Bummer dude
