This thread is not about your favorite song with Artimus in it, this thread is about your favorite music that Artimus played great drums on or drums that mean something to you that lit the fire under the music to lift it all to new heights.
Artimus always told me that when he was hired into Lynyrd Skynyrd that he was hired into the band to light a fire under all their asses and literally drive the band like a herd through a forest fire.
And Artimus was to be that fire. He knew it. He played like it.
And this thread is about those songs that Artimus lit a fire under. And it does not have to be a Skynyrd song. A thread about Artimus can go outside of one band.
And kind of ironic the song I'd like to use to start this thread is a particular favorite of mine namely because I had a connection to the band, but namely because it is not a Skynyrd tune.
Its a tune by Those Guys, yes Those Guys. It was the name of this version of an APB band. Artimus joined into what they were doing and became a member of their band, but at the same time it became another APB band for Artimus. And as I recall Artimus played drums on at least one of their albums recorded in St. Augustine Florida I believe at the same place and producer where Brandon and his new band Danger Bird are also recording their new music so maybe he can tell us more about that place and producer- Devito? I think his name is?
Here's the thing... in Skynyrd Artimus is sort of reigned in and held in check and can't really explode all over the place as he would might like to. But when those limitations are off of him, and he can do as he pleases, we can get some real artistic playing from him.
And outside of Skynyrd and in a Florida band called Those Guys, Artimus recorded a song with them called "Goose Creek" where on this track it sounds like to me Artimus might be playing a snare with steel brushes like what is commonly used in jazz bands. And it sounds like he did some snare doubling in this track which in my opinion really makes this track what it is, and is the main thing I focus when listening to it played back as loud as I can stand it- I am listening to the artistic value of Artimus playing- amazing.
Really, as I listen to this track with some good speakers, you can hear the amazing playing Artimus is dishing out here. It sounds like one track of him playing an aggressive snare as he is hammering it with what sounds like steel brushes to me, and then laid in behind this snare track is another one with Artimus using regular wooden sticks to lay in these fast riffs on the snare. He is just killing it in this track and in my opinion Artimus drum playing makes this track and takes it to another level. And this is why he was hired to play for Lynyrd Skynyrd in November of 1974.
And, I'd have to say this song could have been a hit if only independents like this could get on the radio I am sure America would have liked this song as much as I have since I first heard it.
And if any of you would like to hear this great song I have uploaded an mp3 version of it you can download and enjoy.

***Be aware this album is no longer in production and no longer for sale. So giving away one song for free is not going to prevent any copyright violation sales losses. But I would encourage you to buy the album from ebay or amazon.com if you can find it. And I just checked both ebay and amazon and sadly, but not one single copy of this album is to be found for sale, so good luck finding one! I wonder how much this makes my signed copy now worth??? Its a museum piece! Ha.
Also be aware this song is not available on youtube either. Just checked. So this may be the only place you can get this rare kick ass Artimus track!

I am also sitting on this band's demo recordings of the source song material for this album, but sadly it does not include a demo version of Goose Creek which would make it very worthwhile indeed to me... so there is more unreleased skynyrdysh music in the can... somewhere.
One thing that is interesting that came from this collaboration is the extra side projects and new bands that came from this.
For example, at this same time Artimus was also playing with a number of other musicians, and would go on to create a new band called the Truth which contained Artimus and Banner Thomas and Rocco Marshall and sometimes Jimbo Essery and others but this one blew up like a nuclear bomb went off!
Banner got mad at Artimus for something and then spouted off at the mouth some nasty ass shyt about Artimus and his past charges everyone knew was bogus, but Banner went and crossed that line with Artimus and ended any connection those two woud ever have again. It was so bad that one night at the Tradewinds bar in downtown St. Augustine, Florida Artimus was on stage performing and guess who walks in? Banner Thomas. And he jumps up on stage and pushes his way into performing with the band Artimus was playing with. What did Artimus do? I watched as he quietly put the drum sticks down and walk to the front of the stage and step down and off the stage simply because Banner had gotten up on it.
Yeah, it was over. The Skynyrd-hatshyt feud went to a new level.
But we got some music out of that new band. I am sure I am sitting on some video of a show or two somewhere.
Another cool side project to come out of this was Shelton was inspired to write a Skynyrd tribute song. Well, a tribute to all Southern rock, but mostly Skynyrd with his song "Curtis and the Kid" which another St. Augustine bully thug hired henchman and mule for Gary Rossington, big Lou, actually wrote up a 3 page contract trying to get John Shelton Irwin to sign over to big Lou ALL of the rights to this song which big Lou had dreams of pitching to his buddy Gary Rossington in hopes Gary and his Skynyrd band would record it and score a new hit with the song, and, one which would handsomely pay off big Lou to retire financially secure was his scheme.
Only the Mad Manatee was selling.
And, get this... I asked John Shelton Irwin for a copy of that contract. And not sure, but I think Shelton gave me an original copy which was to be signed and returned if sold. So to this day I still have that contract which proves what greedy snakes can do in this bizness...
To this day the only version of Curtis and the Kid song we have to hear is the demo version Shelton himself recorded in his home studio, and with Shelton playing all the instruments heard in the demo version.
This would be a great song if a real Southern rock band would record it. And if you would like to hear this rare track and add it to your Southern rock collection, here is a download link to an mp3 version of it...
rest in peace John Shelton Irwin! Your music lives on!
Oh, and one significant thing I recall... I knew Artimus long after he had left the band Those Guys. And guess who stayed true to each other through thick and thin? Artimus and Shelton. Shelton would go on to perform with numerous other bands Artimus had for years after. We had some great times!
Roll on!

I can tell you all I miss the old mad manatee John Shelton Irwin commonly known just as Shelton Irwin. He was such a great guy. Very talented. A very talented songwriter and arranger.
Many do not know Shelton came to Florida from the Georgia area where he had worked alongside some of the greats of the Atlanta-Macon music and recording scene and having worked with and for the studios where bands like Eric Quincy Tate had recorded.
I wish more about his past could be uncovered. Hint hint to our super sleuths around here. John Shelton Irwin... please dig up what you can find!

ADDED:
Remembering Shelton Irwin- I remember Artimus played in this one band of guys geared towards Skynyrd and Southern rock- mostly.
It was an APB variation band that contained former members of Lynyrd Skynyrd Mike Estes on vocals and guitar, Tim Lindsey on bass and background vocals, and Greg Baril on guitar and vocals, and sometimes Buzzy Meekins on bass and vocals, and sometimes Charlie Hargrett on guitar, and sometimes Shelton Irwin would fill in or join in on guitar and vocals.
I am hoping right now, that I hope in my unreleased collection of audio and video I may find some APB performances that include Shelton Irwin and hopefully him performing Curtis and the Kid, but I doubt it. But I do have video of this band that you have not seen yet...
It is kind of funny in this time period for Artimus his idea of compiling a Skynyrd like band was in playing with former members of the band, but today Artimus can no longer do this and so his focus must change to the music with non-Skynyrd players.
This band even recorded and released a live album from Europe... which I can not even find online right now. Wow. I did not know his old albums were getting so rare. My old albums value is going up and up and up. I do need a new SUV...
