It is well known in the media that two founding members of New Order, Peter Hook (bass) and Bernard Sumner (guitar and vocals) are in constant legal battles over royalties and the continued use of the name "New Order." Kinda like the Skynyrd drama.
It appears Hook threw in the towel because he consigned just about all of his musical equipment and memorabilia to auction, which was held yesterday with great results. He had planned to auction a bunch of rare rehearsal recordings and raw masters, but New Order filed injunction to prevent him.
I'm as big a fan of those Manchester rock bands as I am Skynyrd, so I know pretty much everything about that band and their gear. It appears Hook had possession of Sumner's main stage and recording guitar from the 1980s, a black Tokai Goldstar Sound with custom EMG pickups and vintage Schaller machine heads. I am quite sure Hook ended up with it when the band broke up the first time in 1993 and he found it when cleaning junk out for this auction. It's in kind of rusty shape but definitely can be brought back from the dead. You can pick out the details of it from some Getty Image hi res photos. Most all fans think he used a Fender, but he did not. It's always been a 1984 Tokai Goldstar Sound. It was added to the auction last minute, with a description basically saying it was a junk guitar Hook put together with parts. I know it's the real deal and an easter egg only a true hardcore fan would spot, there is verbiage of "case included" and in the last pic it is unbelievably the road case for Hook's own Viking 1 bass guitar, which he said will be buried with him when he dies. Viking 1 was not a part of this auction. Only the hardest of core New Order fans would know this, and be able to spot both that case and figure out what that guitar is. He even took off the volume knob and replaced one of the white knobs with a black one and removed a few screws from the pick guard!
I have watched many of these auctions over the years and I have NEVER seen a musician do anything like this before, and it does not surprise me that Hooky was the one to do it. He wanted a fan to have that thing. I am ashamed to say I watched the live auction and missed it myself, only to figure it out about an hour after the auction. It sold for only 600 pounds, or about $700 US. That guitar is probably worth $30-40k, Sumner wrote, recorded, and performed nearly all songs from New Order's most successful 3 albums on it. I do hope it ended up with a fan, because that was clearly Hook's intention by throwing off the scent.
The guitar in question:
