Here is an old Skynyrd Frynds post #219 dated 12-16-1998. It is a show review I wrote about a fantastic APB performance out on Cedar Key island in the Gulf of Mexico from a few days earlier...
Man those were the days! The bar owner Linda fed all of us at her house on the island. It was great! She could really cook and when all of the band members pulled up to her house she had one huge spread of food and drink waiting on all of us! I miss those days!
-----------------------------------------------------
Hello Skynyrd Frynds! I think I can speak for all of us who made it out to Cedar Key this past weekend by saying we all had a great time seeing some great performances by the Jim Essery band with special guest Charlie Hargrett !!! And then the APB Band's performance!!! It was a great night! Mike Estes drove 14 hours to this show and just did make it in time. He said he had a little problem with those last 24 miles of straight highway to the island. Mike said as he looked in front of him he saw someone pulling out into his lane to pass someone, but Mike thought it looked like this was happening right in front of him so he wheeled it off the road to avoid a head on collision, only this would not have happened as the car in his lane was over a mile down the road. Mike said it looked like an optical illusion, like the car close to him was the one being passed. Fortunately Mike was alert enough to avoid danger even though there was none this time.
Artimus told all of us there that something very special is happening in his life right now... Patti and John should have this news update on their website real soon if it is not already on there.
I would like to thank everyone of our Skynyrd Frynds who did make it out to Cedar Key: Patti and John, Calicia and her husband, Ryan Young and his friends, and our very own Charlie Hargrett!!!
Artimus was very kind to dedicate the night's performance to the legendary Jesse Stone who is still in the hospital fighting for his life at 97 years of age. The doctors have beaten the infection, but now have some other serious problems to correct. They just found water collecting on Jesse's brain making him dizzy and his vision blury. Doctors are also worried about Jesse becoming diabetic as he is very close now. Not to metion his failing kidneys, dialysis is now a way of life for old Jesse, but the man is hanging in there and beating all the odds. Looks like I will get an opportunity to say the things to him in life that I would have spent the rest of my life regretting not having said them. I was worried that when I was in cedar Key that Jesse would pass from this world and that I would not get to see him again. All of our prayers were answered and Jesse is still with us, even though he has expressed to many that he is ready to go. God bless you Jesse !!! Hopefully very soon there will be some photos up on some websites for you to see Jesse Stone in some of his final performances. Also, those of you who did make it to Cedar Key, Let's hear some stories about it here on Skynyrd Frynds!!! Calicia??? Patti and John??? Ryan??? Charlie???

Skynyrd frynds post #220 dated 12-17-1998 from Ryan Young who I understand is now working for Guitar Player magazine???
Hey all you frynds out there, i just wanted to tell you all about the A.P.B.band at Cedar key, friday night,i was one of the lucky few who got to go to that show, along with Kent G,Patti and John, and some good freinds of mine Calicia and her husband Ralph and two freinds of mine who know nothin about SKYNYRD or A.P.B.,but after friday night they sure are ready to learn more, they were really impressed with the show, and they are eager to attend more, boy i sure love to open peoples eyes to skynyrd,it isnt really hard though, all you gotta do is to really let them hear the music, and boy did they here it and feel it friday night.
We all got to Cedar Key around 9:30pm,its a quiet, very small island, miles from anywhere,we pull up to the bar they were playin at,sorry but i forgot the name,a nice little bar with a couple of pool tables and a good size bar,the bartender said the place had been there over 100 years, anyway we stroll in have couple of drinks and before too long the Jimm Essery Band takes the stage, i think someone said that Jimm Essery had played with The Allmans Brothers before, well they started jammin, and playin some of their own songs as well as some others, and then Charlie Hargrett from Blackfoot, came up and jammed with them for a couple of songs, they really sounded great, then around midnight Artimus took the stage and made couple of anouncements,{one very big, very proud anouncement, that ill let someone else tell} sorry but i dont want to spoil it,youll all find out soon enough im sure.Anyway Artimus dedicated the show to the legendary Jesse Stone who is still in the hospital fighting for his life, he is 97 years old.
The show was like no other i had seen,i had the pleasure of seeing them play three other times, and they were great but tonite they took it to another level and they played there asses off ,they played for well over two hours, and they sounded great every one was dancin and the music was so loud,my ears were ringing when we left, they played alot of Skynyrd songs, some Allman Brothers, and a bunch of other songs,im tellin you people they are really worth seeing, they kick ass,Mike Estes plays a hell of a guitar as well as having a great voice,Tim Lindsy is a hell of a bass player and we all know Arti can play some drums, but what i really noticed most was their other guitar player Greg B.B. Burrell (Baril) as Arti calls him, he really can play like no one ive ever seen,he walks all up and down that guitar like there aint no stoppin him,hes really unbelievable,he used to play with Stevie Ray Vaughn, and man ill bet anything ive got, that hes just as good as Stevie Ray,you really gotta see him,he will blow you away!!.
Well the nights comin to an end and its time for Freebird and Artimus dedicates it to RONNIE,DEAN,STEVE,AND CASSIE,and then he actually sings Freebird as the rest of the band plays and then when the lyrics are over he goes back to the drums and they rip a hell of a finally for about 10mins. then right before the end Mike Estes and Greg go out into the audience and jam together till the end,man it was great, then it was all finaly over and Arti said thanks to everyone and told every one that they were gonna be on tour in Europe for a couple months, and thats pretty much it,sorry the post was so long but i wanted to give everybody the experience as i saw it,well talk to all you SKYNYRD FRYNDS soon. YOUR FRYND, RYAN YOUNG

APB in Clearwater
Hi frynds, We just got back from Clearwater and another APB show. As usual, they SMOKED!! They played to a near capacity crowd at "Club More" and earned a lot of new fans. Club More is a fairly large place, with a patio area outside. The crowd was a bit on the rowdy side (a fight broke out just before "Freebird"), but fun and really seemed to like APB (who wouldn't!!). We met up with Skynyrdfrynds Kent, Calicia, Ryan, Javamonkey, Greenville, & Julia, as well as some other friends and family. There were many Skynyrd shirts being worn in the crowd, as well as some Freebird Foundation shirts. There were two opening bands, but we didn't pay much attention 'cuz we were busy chatting with the frynds. It was Calicia's birthday, so we all helped her celebrate. APB hit the stage, and Arti announced that this night was a special night... it was a birthday party for Ronnie Van Zant! The crowd went ballistic upon hearing that, and the rockin' began! APB was in fine form, and played their hearts out. They played a new song, called "You Can Knock Me Down, But You Can't Knock Me Out" off their upcoming CD (we believe it will be released after their European tour), and it was GREAT!! Can't wait to hear more new songs from this talented bunch! The APB keeps getting better & better, so if you've seen them before, or not... we highly recommend them! :))) Patti & John

RONNIE VAN ZANT 50th BIRTHDAY PARTY !!!
Skynyrd Frynds archived post#353 dated 1-17-1999
Hey ya'll, I just got back in from the APB show in Clearwater now officially dubbed as the "RONNIE VAN ZANT 50th BIRTHDAY PARTY" and I'd say we all had a blast! I'm trying to catch up on my email and have been reading some great stories about the Volunteer Jams! Keep it coming! Some great things have happened in the last 2 days!!! One of the biggies is that APB has started playing live a great new original song called "You can knock me down, but you can't knock me Out!" This is the first and only song recorded by the band so far. It was written by Mike Estes about his real life experience with Gary Rossington's current band kept close in the back of his mind. When Artimus was describing the song you could feel the intensity of the emotion it took to create this song. I have been jokingly kidding the band members that this is a new "Skynyrd" song. It does have the sound and ingredients we are all familiar with and is a rocking kick ass tune. Artie said at this show it was the first time they had played it, but really they had played it for the first time up in Cedar Key the night before! Ryan Young caught that very first time on tape!!! Good going Ryan!!! And Mark Cring was sweating it out in Clearwater trying to get it all on tape there. Soon an audio copy will be making its way around. Needs a little work before it can be spread around. And the video will be close in behind it. Also, Some other great news is that Mike Estes has agreed to join us here at Skynyrd Frynds!!! He said he was looking forward to it. Artimus announced that after their European Tour we can expect them to finish the band's first CD and get it out!!!
Oh! And before I forget! Out of the blue some old timers came into the club to see Artimus! One of them was a dear old friend who had performed in Artimus jazz band APB Walking Outside back in the early 1980's. His name was Dave Shealy. Also stopping by the club was an old photographer who had taken photos of the LYNYRD SKYNYRD band just before their tragic plane crash is 1977. His name is Steve Carlisle and he brought in some of his incredible prints for us to see. Stunning photography!!! Brought Artimus close to tears and others to see these photos for the first time after over 20 years time. Soon all of us will be able to enjoy them!!! Cagey

A whooooops kind of moment!
Skynyrd Frynds archived post #364 dated 1-17-1999 by Ryan Young:
"Yes Kat, i think you are right about Ronnie being 51 this year not 50,although i talked to Artimus Friday night at club moore in Clearwater,i told Artimus that i think Ronnie was 51 this year and he said no that he was older than Ronnie and that he was 51 so Ronnie was 50 this year,i just shruged it off,but if i remember corectly i celebrated Ronnies 50th birthday last year in Jacksonville with Judy Vanzant and some other FRYNDS,i think Artimus is older than Ronnie but not by a full year, and being that Ronnies birthday is at the beginning of the year, i think that kinda threw Artimus off a little..But either way....HAPPY BIRTHDAY RONNIE VANZANT!!!!!!!!!!"

This afternoon I am going over the raw footage Mark Cring gave me from Friday night's show in Clearwater. I have some questions for the list. Since Artimus made a mistake in the age of Ronnie it can't be called RVZ's 50th B-day party. Should I just change the year to RVZ's 51st B-day party??? Or how should it be titled??? I have thought of just calling it: APB, RVZ's Birthday Party 1/15/99 Clearwater, Florida.
Man o' man. I'm listening to APB start up Simple Man. WOW! What feeling. These guys play it like they mean it! They change the arrangements some and add new parts. The changes are refreshing. The intensity of this new band is incredible! Artimus is in to it something fierce this night. His chops are tight and mean! Snappy! Kickin' Ass!!
Lot's of interesting info on the tape. Somewhere in the show Mike Estes refers to Artimus as his illigitimate father or something like that. I learned later that Artimus' dad and Mike's dad came from the same place in Kentucky and that there is a slim chance of the two being related. Also something I noticed later on tape that I did not catch during the show was that during SWEET HOME ALABAMA Mike Estes changed a lyric and kept on going. He changed "watergate" to "Monicagate"! Also on this tape is the band's new song "YOU CAN KNOCK ME DOWN, BUT YOU CAN'T KNOCK ME OUT!" I believe this was written by Mike Estes about his days with or after his tenure in Gary's new band. A very interesting song and I hope someone will transcribe the lyrics and bring them to the list for open discussion on Skynyrd Frynds! I might try to do it. Artimus helps out some by telling everyone there some of the lyrics as he described the song for us.
It is refreshing to hear a band like APB. They play like there is no tomorrow. They play to have fun with what they do. It is never played the same way twice. The show kicks butt and I can't wait to get it out to ya'll. There are some technical difficulties to overcome before it can be put out. First of all a complete audio copy will have to come from 2 sources and mixed together. Then it will have to be processed some for smoother sound quality. Mark was all alone to record with a cassette machine and a video camera and a regular 35mm. I was of no help to Mark this night and he still did a good job. Sorry Mark! I just wanted to watch the show. The video is complete but the to me has some distortion in it from being too close and the cassette copy is clean but it is not complete. It is missing the first song or two so I will have to take it from the video tape to fill in for a complete show on audio tape. This could take a week or more to finish, but it is on the way! The first real APB tape to make its way around and it has a new song on it!!! No bootlegging now!!!
