VeeGee posted a link to a Larry Goad interview in the Smoke House band thread... after I read it some red flags popped up for me so I thought maybe we could dig a little deeper into his claim...

Hello and thank you for kindly answering our questions, where are you from?
I was born and raised in Nashville Tennessee.
I wanted to talk about your musical history since your adolescence to the Dixie Tabernacle's project. What did you do?
Well I was in Smoke House through High School...
How did you come to work with Artimus Pyle on his CD?
I met Artimus in 1974, I saw him sit in with Skynyrd at a show that summer, and the night of Charlie Daniels first Volunteer Jam I was playing a bar in Cookville Tn. with my band Smoke House and who walks in at the end of the night? Artimus. He couldn't believe I knew he was with Skynyrd already. We became friends for the next several years. Ronnie was a friend also. He wore my Smoke House Shirt everywhere trying to help my band."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ronnie was a friend too he says, but he offers no background or clarification as to the how, and when this came to be. Only that it was.
Let's also place a few more things he said into context...
Volunteer Jam I
October 4, 1974 The very first Volunteer Jam concert was held at War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, TN. The show was scheduled as a live recording session for two songs for the Fire on the Mountain album, "No Place to Go" and "Orange Blossom Special." The CDB invited some of their friends - Dickey Betts from the Allman Brothers Band and Toy Caldwell, Jerry Eubanks and Paul Riddle from the Marshall Tucker Band - to get together and Jam after their set. A tradition was born. "Ain't it good to be alive, and be in Tennessee!" - Charlie Daniels 1974"
Now, I need to ask a question... does anyone know when Artimus had his audition with the Skynyrd band members in Atlanta, Georgia? We need this information here big time.
During the time I knew Artimus for well over 17 years, he always said he joined the band in London in November of 1974. And that he was already in London playing with some band when Bob Burns went nuts and the band called back to the USA looking for Artimus only to find out he was already in the same city as the band- London, England.
Artimus told me that he joined the band and toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd for 4 months until Bob was finally sent home. These 4 months would be November and December of 1974, and January and February of 1975- based on what Artimus told me.
However, when we examine the claim of Larry Goad, he says:
1- "I met Artimus in 1974, I saw him sit in with Skynyrd at a show that summer"
What show would this be? Skynyrd played Cooksville, Tenn on April 18, 1974, and Nashville on June 9, 1974, and Memphis July 28, 1974, and Nashville again September 21, 1974. One of these shows? Anyone ever heard of Artimus sitting in with the band during this time period? New to me.
And,
2- "and the night of Charlie Daniels first Volunteer Jam I was playing a bar in Cookville Tn. with my band Smoke House and who walks in at the end of the night? Artimus. He couldn't believe I knew he was with Skynyrd already."
"Already" That Volunteer Jam 1 happened on October 4, 1974 BEFORE the Skynyrd band went to London. And a full month BEFORE when Artimus told me he joined the band.
And Larry Goad says Artimus strolled into the bar where his band Smoke House was playing in Cookville, Tennessee...
Only one problem Larry... on October 4, 1974 the Skynyrd band was in Denver, Colorado:
Now it is possible his story could be true, because Artimus was NOT in Skynyrd in October of 1974. And he was friends with Charlie Daniels and Marshall Tucker Band, so it is possible Artimus himself was at the Volunteer Jam 1 show on that night and could have stopped in at the bar in Cooksville, Tenn.
But this would indicate to me that Artimus was driving back to Carolinas on the same night of the Volunteer Jam and stopped at the bar on his way home?
Could be?
My point is, that some of what Larry is claiming and saying is not quite adding up for me. Maybe his memory is a little off, but he is very specific.
Maybe someone needs to contact Larry Goad and see if he will explain his claim further and how Ronnie and he became good enough friends for Ronnie to wear his band's shirt on stage with Skynyrd.
And I just checked and Cooksville, Tennessee is on the main interstate hiway on the way back to Carolinas east of Tennessee, but I have a hard time believing Artimus would have made that drive that night on October 4. I tend to think he would have stayed in Nashville for the night and then drove back the following day. But I could be wrong.
