This was an impromptu show in Asheville, NC, the day after Warren Haynes’ annual Christmas Jam events, when a huge snow kept the artists from flying out of town. I think that’s Artimus’ son on the other drum set.

Just talked with artimus tonight. He absolutely loved playing and hanging out with Dave Grohl. He said they are kindred spirits both being drummers in successful bands and losing their lead singers.

That’s one of the best versions of Simple Man I’ve heard Warren Haynes and company do. Artimus sounds great. Love the sax solo!

I was NOT expecting Dave Grohl to be in this video!!! That's INSANE!!!!!!! In case you guys don't know who Dave is, let me tell ya a bit about him....... Dave Grohl started out as the drummer for a local band in his childhood hometown in Virginia called Mission Impossible, and later another local band called Dain Bramage (Dain Bramage had one album called "I Scream Not Coming Down", which I THINK may've been the first studio effort of Dave's to have been given an official release). Dave later became the drummer for a metal band called Scream, which let him play and sing the first ever song that he wrote, called "Gods Look Down". His work in Scream inspired Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic to hire him as the new drummer for Nirvana. Dave was the fifth of five drummers for Nirvana (he was on both Nevermind and In Utero, but not the first album Bleach (which mostly featured Chad Channing on drums, but some tracks were from a 1988 demo tape recorded with Dale Crover on the drums)). Nirvana before Dave (with Chad Channing): Nirvana with Dave: Dave Grohl is best known, however, for starting and fronting (as singer and guitarist for) The Foo Fighters, which started not long after the death of Kurt Cobain. Like the survivors of Skynyrd's plane crash, Dave ended up going back to the only thing he knew: writing and recording music. Oddly enough, some of the earliest Foo Fighters songs were songs that Dave wrote when still in Nirvana. He even released a demo tape amongst the underground music community called "Late!: Pocketwatch" in 1992. Some of which Kurt heard and even wanted to do, such as "Alone + Easy Target" and "Exhausted". While waiting for Kurt to show up in the studio for their last studio session in ealry 1994 (the session where "You Know You're Right" came from, which would remain unreleased until 2002), Dave and bassist Krist Novoselic recorded some demos for songs that Dave wrote, as well as write and record a future Foo Fighters song called "Big Me". This is the 1994 "Nirvana" demo for "Big Me" Sadly, Nirvana only got to record AND release just ONE song of Dave's, with Dave on guitar and lead vocals, Krist on bass, and Kurt on drums and backup vocals. The song ended up being an "In Utero" b-side. I believe it was the b-side for "Heart-Shaped Box", but I'm not sure. Dave;s original 1992 demo for "Marigold". Nirvna's finished version of "Marigold", unreleased alternate mix. The Foo Fighters' live rendition of "Marigold" It's rumored that The Foo Fighters' songs "My Hero" and "In Your Honor" were both written about Kurt, but only one Foo Fighters' song has been confirmed to be actually about him: "Friend Of A Friend", a song about the day Dave joined Nirvana, and what Kurt and Krist were like on that day. Long live Mr. Grohl!!!!!!!

I’m old, and really knew nothing about Dave Grohl before the Christmas Jam weekend. I may never be a huge Nirvana or Foo Fighters fan, but I sure became a fan of Dave Grohl as a human being!

Dave Grohl is a fantastic musician and man. I’m not a gigantic fan of Foo Fighters, but I would say Dave is one of the last remaining true “rock stars.”

Dave Grohl is a fantastic musician and man. I’m not a gigantic fan of Foo Fighters, but I would say Dave is one of the last remaining true “rock stars.” I couldn't agree more about him being one of the last "rock stars" today. I also agree with the previous post about him being great as a human being overall. Found some cool videos on the subject matter while I'm thinking about it. My dad was one of the last of the baby boomers and my mom came out of the mid sisties. Neither of them understood or liked the whole grunge or alternative rock thing. So growing up I never listened to any of it because they would never play it. But after a couple of years of my dad playing his pandora station on full blast every evening, which would often play the same (seemingly) 20 songs over and over and over again, I started to get annoyed and very burnt out on some of that stuff. With the exception of Skynyrd, obviously, but everything else, from CCR, "Spirit In The Sky", "Ain't No Sunshine", and especially The Animals were all becoming monotonous to me. So I started to venture out into the music world to see what I can listen to. It was then I started watching "90's Nation" on VH1 Classic (now MTV Classic), where I saw several Foo FIghters videos, as well as one Nirvana video ("In Bloom (Alternate Version)") when I thought, THIS IS IT!!! THIS IS THE NEW KIND OF MUSIC I WAS NEEDING!!! Now I'm not only super into both of those bands, but also into Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Green Day, R.E.M., and several new bands like Noiseheads, Allusinlove (formerly Allusondrugs), Pagoda (featuring actor Michael Pitt), Pardoner, Pllush, Blossom, Happy Diving, and Potty Mouth. It's like I'm being refreshed by walking through an open door that leads me to an entirely new (to me) world of music. You know what I mean? Speaking of ex-Nirvana band members, the bass player and co-founder of Nirvana, Chris "Krist" Novoselic, now finally has a post-Nirvana band of his own, which is more of a folk-rock band. He not only continues to play bass for these guys, but also the accordian (which, from what I've heard, was his first instrument). They're called Giants In The Trees. I have a limited edition "homegrown" edition of their debut album, which was made with a cardboard sleeve, pasted cutouts of the album art, and signatures from all four band members, including Krist. Here's their very irst official music vieo.

Dave Grohl respects rock 'n' roll heritage. His documentary, "Sound City," is all about the L.A. recording studio whose unique characteristics yielded huge albums for Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty ... and Nirvana. He loved Sound City so much that he bought the custom-made Neve recording console when the studio shut down. It's a fascinating document, and Grohl is clearly in awe of his musical forebears.

Here's another post-Nirvana band, this time with Chad Channing, the guy who played drums for the band before Dave did. He did most of the tracks from the first Nirvana album, Bleach, with the exception of three tracks which were taken from a demo tape Nirvana recorded with Dale Crover of Melvins fame on the drums. Like Krist's new band, Chad's new band is VERY much different from Nirvana in taste and sound. They're called Before Cars.

Great posts in this thread, but maybe next time just post the links to the videos on Youtube. There's so many embedded videos, it takes a small eternity for this page to load now.

Great posts in this thread, but maybe next time just post the links to the videos on Youtube. There's so many embedded videos, it takes a small eternity for this page to load now. That's not possible, unless the posters add some coding when posting their videos. I can tweak the forum settings so that You Tube links will post as links, but that's going to apply to the entire forum. I can only suggest posting fewer vids in order to make a point. Some members post 5 or 6 vids one after the other. That's never necessary, and it's doubtful that all the vids are watched. One or two should make the point just as effectively. Edit: there were 33 videos in Heath's first post and 8 in the second (sorry Heath, I don't want to single you out, and I do appreciate your passion for the music). I took it upon myself to remove some in order to help loading. I seriously doubt that anyone here is going to watch 41 videos of Dave Grohl, with or without Nirvana.
