Thought this was funny...
Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer, Artimus Pyle not dead yet
Mitch McCracken, Memphis Entertainment Examiner June 22, 2010
Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer, Artimus Pyle is not dead yet no matter what you may read on the internet.
Lynyrd Skynyrd has a new album out today called Live from Freedom Hall. The songs look like Skynyrd from back in the day including “What’s Your Name,” “That Smell,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Free Bird.”
As I was reading the review on AllMusic.com (usually a good source of information) it was mentioned how many members have passed away now. “…lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines died in 1977, drummer Artimus Pyle died in 1990, bassist Leon Wilkeson died in 2001, replacement bassist Ean Evans died in 2009, as did keyboardist Billy Powell.“
I was shocked to learn that Artimus Pyle had passed away in 1990. Really? Did he really?
I was working here in Memphis at Rock 103 when Artimus Pyle, who joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1974, ran for help after the plane crashed in 1977.
In 1991 the late Artimus Pyle (late that is according to AllMusic.com) joined the reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd in recording Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 before departing the band during a show in Toronto in August of 1991.
In 2007, Pyle was touring with the band Deep South. Not bad for a dead man who also released a solo album, Artimus Venomus, on Cleopatra Records that year.
Pyle currently plays solo and with various musicians, including previous members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute bands and currently resides in Willis, Virginia according to my sources.
Even in AllMusic.com’s entry on Artimus Pyle there is no mention of his passing in 1990…Editor…Editor, can we get an editor over here?
UPDATE: Steve Leggett has now corrected his review on AllMusic.com to reflect that it was guitarist Allen Collins who died in 1990.
