Why was Artimus not in the RCB?
Tailgator answers in an old Skynyrd Frynds post back in 1999:
I have received several emails after the Alias Contraband thread asking
me why Artimus Pyle did not drum for the Rossington-Collins band. Well,
just before the reformation and the incarnation of RCB, Artimus was up
in South Carolina doing his own thing. He had a band together, called
Studebaker Hawk (Ohio Silver) with vocalist Darryl Smith, whom Artie
had played with in an early 70s band called 'Next Voice' - by Artie's
own description - "sort of space-age jazz fusion bullshit group" -
(lol) and guitarist John Boerstler. This band evolved into the first
APB band after the addition of another guitarist, Steve Lockhart. But,
before that, Artie and Allen had been communicating, tossing around the
idea of another band (RCB) and Artie hopped on his motorcycle one day
for a trip to Florida and had a terrible accident - hit a car and broke
his leg in 12 places, shattered it. Almost had to amputate it.
Therefore, when Allen and Gary started rehearsing for the formation of
RCB, Artie was unavailable, into heavy duty therapy and all. This is the
reason why Artimus Pyle was not the drummer for RCB.
Hope that answers your question. As for the other question - yes, the
first APB album was produced by members of the Marshall Tucker Band,
Doug Gray, Jerry Eubanks, and George McCorkle, at their studio in
Spartanburg, Creative Arts.
