This is a post from the old Yahoo Group. Someone asked this question:
Cagey's reply got him recounting what Arti had told him about the GBMB cover and also how he joined the band.
I had no idea that Arti arrived before Bob had left. I always assumed that Bob couldn't stand the pressure of touring anymore and just left, and that the band hired Arti to replace him. It seems that this isn't how it played out.

I asked Artimus about this very cover many years ago. I will try and recall most of what he said about it. The archives here at Skynyrd Frynds may have more info for ya on it. Just do some searching thru the archives...
Artimus said this cover was taken at some movie maker's western film set at I think Burbank, California. The band was walking around out in the street of this western movie set and MCA had arranged the album cover session with a professional photographer.
Artimus got his position in Lynyrd Skynyrd because of a close band frynd named Charlie Daniels. Basically Charlie knew Ronnie and Skynyrd were looking for a drummer and Charlie had used Artimus for some shows and was gonna keep Artimus but his drummer came back as I recall and this left Artimus with no band. Artimus was also hanging out with the Marshall Tucker Band during this time before he joined Skynyrd. This is the route he came into Skynyrd thru is what I am trying to say.
Ronnie and Skynyrd were looking at some local Jacksonville drummers and had some auditions set up when Charlie mentioned to Ronnie he knew of a drummer in South Carolina who might be a good choice for Skynyrd. The one and only man Charlie Daniels recommended to Ronnie was Artimus Pyle.
Ronnie then had Artimus bring his drums to Atlanta as I recall and him and Gary and maybe Allen drove up for an audition. And out of that they told Artimus to get his things and meet them in Jacksonville. Artimus was then put on the road with Lynyrd Skynyrd touring for about 4 months with Bob Burns and even shared hotel rooms with Bob during this time as Artimus learned his parts and took over for Bob. The end for Bob came when he lost it in England. Artimus was already in London for another project he was working on when the call came from Ed King to America looking for Artimus not knowing he was already in London where Skynyrd was when the call was placed. An odd coincidence since it was probably Artimus' first trip to London.
Anyways... when they shot the cover of the GBMB album, it was Artimus Pyle who scrawled in the dirt in front of the band CDB meaning Charlie Daniel's Band. Artimus did it because it was Charlie who got him the job in the band first and foremost, and because he was such a good band frynd. Artimus was in a way thanking and paying tribute to Charlie Daniels in the GBMB album cover photo.
I hope this helps. This is about all I recall of the cover photo of GBMB. It is interesting to me that two of the band's album covers were shot on western movie prop streets. Gimme Back My Bullets and Street Survivors were both taken on western movie prop streets. Were they the same one? I am not sure. Anyone know?
On the cover of the Gimme Back my Bullets album, there are pictures taken in front of some bar / roadhouse (on the front and back of the cover). Can anyone ID the place where these shots were taken? Name, location and some history would be great.
