It is about time Tom Dowd was inducted! How many artists were inducted because of his work efforts?
I'd like to take this opportunity to say that the RRHF has lost quite a bit of credibility over the years by not limiting their inductees to rock and roll- an example would be the induction of Madonna. Since when is she rock and roll? How can you stand up non-rock and roll crap "Like A Virgin" next to the King of rock and roll Elvis? Or the Beatles? Or Lynyrd Skynyrd? Ugh!
They have no limits it would seem so what is to stop them from inducting Glenn Miller? Or the Village People? Or Hank Williams?
And, I know no one asked me for this opinion, but I'd like to complain about the basis of induction- which is based on fame.
Humans should have halls of merit. Halls of quality. Halls of honor. Not halls of fame.
Using fame as a measuring rule for success allows for debacles like Milli Vanilli and Ed King to get inducted- people who are completely inept at producing quality music ON THEIR OWN. But if you measured success in terms of quality, merit, and honor, then we would not have this problem.
Another problem with a hall of fame is that they do not overlook criminal behavior such as Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary was convicted of sex with a child. Pete Townsend of the WHO was involved in child pornography and was a sentenced registered sex offender. And there are others.
The question that should be asked is should we as humans be honoring in halls of fame drug addicts and child rapists? Is this the right message we are sending to our children? Look what you can grow up to be and everyone will love you! Look at Michael Jackson! Another one.
At this rate what is stopping the RRHF from inducting Charles Manson for his one and only album? Surely Charles Manson has more than enough fame for them, but are his crimes worthy of keeping him out of the RRHF? With all the riff raff already inducted Charles Manson would fit right in.
Another issue to be raised with stupid halls of fame is that they stay focused on the artists. What about all the people who made that artist who and what they are? What about the engineers and producers? Assistant engineers? Record company executives? Managers?
The technical side of music is largely ignored and it should not be.
Humans are focusing on the wrong things and honoring only part of the whole picture of making music.
While I am glad Tom Dowd is finally being inducted, in some ways it is too little too late. Not enough engineers and producers are recognized while some real scumbags who are complete idiots and morons who can bang on a drum are inducted and glorified.
I have to wonder if this is why some artists tell the RRHF to take their induction and to shove it up where the sun don't shine?

I gotta say that I agree with your assessment of the RRHOF Cagey. Some of the inductees over the years have made a mockery of the whole thing. Madonna??? I could never stand that "Like a Virgin" song, hated it the first time I heard it and never changed my mind about that. I have to give her one thing though: she's very good at self-promotion.
Abba's another head-scratcher for me, as are all those rappers who got in. And someone remind me again: how long did it take for Skynyrd to get in? Nuff said.
I also agree that the people working on the technical side of the music industry are unfairly neglected. Which only proves that it's not about merit, it's about $$$. Geeze, what a surprise!
