ALSO i HAVE OFTEN WONDERED MYSELF WHO WAS IT THAT GENE WAS BASHING IN HIS INTERVIEW OF SOMEONE WHO WENT INTO THE WOODS AND SQUATTED DOWN AND DIDN'T HELP A SOUL WAS IT BILLY OR WHO DOES ANYONE KNOW i ALWAYS ASSUMED IT WAS BILLY? I don't know who was in the woods, but after the crash, Gene was pinned underneath a wing. Hot hydraulic fluid poured into one of his eyes, blinding him for life. He said he reached out to Billy, who was sitting on the wing, holding his nose in place, but Billy kicked at him to keep him away. Who you REALLY are comes out for sure in a situation like this. What does it say about your character if you just sit there concerned only for yourself? What does it say if you are capable of kicking at a likely dying man regardless of the trauma around you? How would each one of us react under such ridiculous circumstances? On that note, here are some more random thoughts on this fine Friday morning: There is a range of quality in people that is never fully exposed and/or appreciated because the measures are hidden behind the scenes only to be revealed at times when selfless sacrifice is required. We have not been groomed to question who we really are in the spectrum of worst to best. Religion attempts this but the presentation has limited appeal and it sorely lacks an objective measurement of success/understanding which usually results in a lifetime of meaningless discussion. Devious actions in society that define one's character are marginalized and/or spun based on agendas that are never known or questioned resulting in a lifetime of un-exposed fraud and a fabricated Reality that the clueless just go along with. Most people live a lifetime similar to that of a barnyard animal unaware of the fences and the daily repercussions of standing around like fools. We make up truths that magically make us the center of the universe observing and critiquing others when any possibility of evolution beyond the barnyard requires that we all start looking in the mirror and observing and critiquing ourselves. OK, we can all go back to chewing our grass now. Have a great weekend Skynyrd Fans!

I do know from seeing some of Genes vids. he has a real problem with Arti leaving the way he did. Also Gary has the same problem. I assume that you are talking about Arti "leaving" the scene of the accident to go get help? I don't remember seeing those vids. But I have to believe that Arti (and Ken Peden and Marc Frank) did what they thought best under the circumstances. They didn't know who was dead and who was alive, and what was the extent of the injuries to the survivors. Rescue time was of the essence. They weren't injured as severely as the others, but they were injured nevertheless. I'm sure it required effort on their part to go get help.

Anyone who criticizes Arti has to remember that he was in the military. He had the instincts pounded into his brain, if something happened to his troops, the first and foremost thing they do is try and get help. I'm sure the ones who were there and are judging may have their own reasons, but Arti had specific training for things of this magnitude and he may have been reacting based on that. ( That thing in the woods could have been that " Squatch " thing roaming around, just kidding of course )

Artimus has told me over and over his reasons for leaving the crash site. He makes it very clear that he knew the sun was going down and that he was unable to help people inside that plane who were screaming out for help. He could not get to them to help them. And with the sun going down Artimus knew that the only thing he could do was run to get help as fast as he could.
If Artimus had just sat around outside that plane and done nothing he would have been criticized. If he had tried to help people inside the plane or out and could not do anything, he would have been criticized for not doing enough.
There were other people outside that plane walking around who also heard the screams and could do nothing to help those trapped inside the twisted wreckage.
Artimus walked around the plane trying to check things out to see if he could do anything and he was not able to get inside the front of the plane. He said he dropped out of the plane through a hole torn in the fuselage and climbing back up into that plane was not an option. Artimus thought some of his ribs were sticking out but he was not sure. He was bleeding and knew he would soon go into shock.
Artimus told me found both pilots dead and that he thought they were literally decapitated. Nothing he could do there. He continued walking around that plane listening to the horrific cries for help from within that plane and quickly realized as the light was fading the only thing he could do was to leave the crash site and go find help and bring strong able people back to the crash site to help those injured and trapped inside that plane.
At that point in time Artimus thought it was absolutely the only thing he could do to help his brothers and sisters and I see no reason why anyone would dare to criticize him for his decision to leave the crash site.
And apparently others followed Artimus lead. You can bet Artimus did not tell Keden Peden and Marc Frank, hey you guys follow me out for help. No way. Those guys would only slow him down and Artimus did leave them behind and did not wait up for them. Artimus ran for help and those two men followed him out arm in arm helping each other.
Why did those men follow Artimus out? Were they also running for help for those at the crash site or were they running out seeking help for themselves? Artimus makes it very clear he was running out for help for his brothers and sisters and NOT for himself.
Artimus rode back to the crash site with Johnny Mote and pointed to the crash site trying to help the growing numbers of people arriving near the crash site to know the way into find those injured. Artimus told them if you could throw a baseball or rock as far as you could back in there three times that is how far the plane is in that swamp(or something close to this effect)
At this time Artimus began going into shock himself and he was loaded up and rushed to a hospital. He had done all he could under those circumstances.
He should be praised for his efforts, not criticized and lied about and called a coward who ran. Those are just malicious personal attacks by people who may not like him on a personal level for their own reasons.
I believe Artimus's actions were motivated by a strong desire on his part to get help to his brothers and sisters as quickly as he could while overlooking his own injuries to do so.

Anyone who dose not praise Artimus for what he did is just down right wrong! Under those circumstances or any other it is my opinion that he did the only thing he could do and that was go for help!

Thank you for telling us what Arti told you, Cagey. I've never heard either Gene or Gary express dissatisfaction with what Arti did. I never heard them express any feelings about it, whether positive or negative. But go back to the opening post of this lengthy thread: some dope said something on You Tube about Arti getting to Johnny Mote's farm, raiding the fridge and helping himself to a sandwich! Looks to me like there are a some revisionists out there who would like to deny Arti his due.
What I think (and this is nothing more than a personal opinion) is that Arti probably saved some lives by going to get help the way he did. Some of the more seriously injured survivors (Leon comes to mind) may well have gone into shock and died if help had taken longer to arrive. As RCGirl rightly pointed out, Arti did what his military training told him was the best thing to do: get help. There wasn't anything he could do by remaining there. He couldn't move the injured survivors and he couldn't treat them. The best thing to do was to get people who could do that to the scene of the accident as quickly as possible.

I really think having to stay on the scene and listen to those screams from inside the plane is partly what drove Artimus to run for help knowing he could not do anything for them and how difficult it must have been to be outside the plane and to hear those screams from inside the plane. Surely that is a motivation knowing you were unable to help them and to hear them scream would only surely make one find a way to try to do something for them like run for help.
Now, one thing I would like to say is that yes Artimus ran for help, but retrospectively he did not have to.
Houston air traffic control knew the plane was going down before it hit the ground.
Houston radio'd the U.S. Coast Guard who sent in helicopters to the site and they found that plane while Artimus was on his way out to find help. So as Artimus was approaching Johnny Mote's farm yelling plane crash, plane crash staring down the barrel of a 12 guage shotgun pointed at his head, as Artimus went down to his knees to avoid being shot he was pointing back over his head and shoulder towards the plane crash site and Johnny Mote could clearly see the Coast Guard helicopters hovering over the site shining their bright spotlights down into the swamp and crash site. So those helicopters were a validation for Artimus to not be mistaken as an escaped criminal and were largely part of the reason Johnny Mote accepted the plane crash story from Artimus and immediately jumped into action to load up Artimus and maybe the others Kenny Peden and Marc Frank and haul all of them back to the crash site where help had already begun to arrive on the scene on the ground and in the air.
The Coast Guard was lowering men by rope through the trees and down to the plane. A very dangerous maneuver for them but they did it probably in the clearing the path of the plane cleared out as it went down giving the pilots enough of an opening to clearly drop in medical help right on top of the plane crash site- as others were now making their way into the site on foot.
It must have been a eerie site to have several helicopters hovering above shining lights down into those woods after dark.
So yes, Artimus did run for help, but he had no way of knowing at the time that help was indeed already on the way and that hospitals were also being informed to prepare as well. Doctors even raced to the plane crash site and went inside that plane to help stabilize injured victims and help get them out.
Artimus never went back to the crash site. He went into shock at the edge of the swamp pointing rescuers to the plane and was loaded up and hauled off to a hospital.

Go back and listen to Mr Mote on the Uncilvil War show. He said he did shoot but it was into the air. I also think he said that he saw the Helicopter before Arti came out of the woods and it wasnt near a house they were out working a field and that is where he saw Arti come out of the woods. IIRC he only mentioned Arti...

Artimus has repeatedly said his shoulder was impacted by the fringe edge of the shotgun blast and that one of more of the pellets hit him in the shoulder as Johnny was lifting the shotgun into the air as he was firing it realizing what Artimus was telling him combined with the sight of the helicopters.
Based on all the different accounts collectively we all now have a pretty good idea of what happened.

Mote stated that he was in the field working and that is where he saw Arti and fired the shot in the air, I dont think they were anywhere near the house...and that is why Mote didnt call any rescue he wasnt by the house. And he saw the choppers before Arti and he also heard the crash though he said he thought maybe a car accident.

And I suppose people usually carry a shotgun with them while working in the fields? Somehow I doubt that. The shotgun more than likely came directly out of the home along with Johnny.
Is it possible Johnny may have been in the field when he saw them coming towards him from out of the woods some distance away and he dropped what he was doing and ran to his home to get his shotgun where the confrontation occurred?
I have heard this story out of Artimus own mouth and he said he heard the wife and child screaming out of fear as they believed he and the two others covered in blood were some of the escaped convicts reported over the news earlier that day.
I seriously doubt Johnny Mote carried a shotgun with him to work in the field.
Also, Artimus said Johnny then loaded him up and took him back to the crash site area at the edge of the woods.
Now if Johnny could see the rescue helicopters and possibly hear the sirens of the ground people approaching why would he need to call any rescue personnel when they were obviously already there and more on the way?
Also something that I find puzzling is that when Johnny's wife saw the three bloody men approaching their home why didn't she call for help on a phone like the police or something before the men made it to their front door? Why did she grab up the child and run for cover?
Is it possible Johnny Mote may not even have had a phone to call anyone at the time? Surely the wife could have done this long before the men approached their location, but no one did this and Johnny ran for his shotgun.
Again, I seriously doubt Johnny or anyone would carry a shotgun into the field to work. It seems much more likely that if Johnny was outside that he would try and reach his shotgun before the bloody men made it to him and his family.

Could it be that Johnny Mote took a gun with him to work in the field because he knew of the escaped convicts? Just thinking aloud here. Another possibility is that he is engaging in some revisionism of his own because, when all is said and done, shooting an airplane crash survivor doesn't seem like a very nice thing to do.
Whatever the case, Arti's and Johnny Mote's stories do seem to conflict. Maybe each of them is telling it as he remembers it. After all, it's been 35 years. Memories fade or get altered with the passage of time.

Yes it sure isnt odd for a farmer to have a gun in the tractor or truck for that matter where i live. Also Arti, not saying he is telling a "story", but he had just been in an airplane crash, knew he had dead and dying friends, was himself seriously injured and had to be in serious shock. I dont recall the survivors injuries, but was Arti treated for pellet wounds? Dont know why Mr. Mote would have a reason to tell a "story".

Coming from someone who lives in LA, that sounds bad-ass Md. A real Free Bird. The last of a dying breed these days! Sounds like you have a lot of open spaces out there. I LOVE my Bronco. It's a stock '92 with the "Roll-Along" package that adds a little cool to it. I bought it new and will never drive anything else. Everyone identifies me by my truck and they can usually hear me coming too!

Artimus was in the Marines and in multiples vehicle crashes in his life. That scar could be from anything. I doubt he was shot. The Motes let him in to use the phone to call his wife for Christ's sake. A warning shot over his head would be over his head, the pattern would not be that big at say 50 yards, to hit Artimus anywhere. Like the story of the broken ribs sticking from his side, it got overblown with each re-telling. Basically Artimus was bruised up a lot, no doubt so was Pedren as well. That was the extent of his injuries. If he was really shot he would have produced a doctors report by now saying "removed shotgun pellets" and put this issue to bed.
