This how the Greatest Song List is going to work. Frynds are going to name the songs they feel are some of the greatest songs written/recorded. Then I will create a poll so we can vote on them to place the songs in an order. I strongly suggest you give a reason why consider the song one of greatest songs. This is not a list of favorite songs. I love Collective Soul's "December", Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" and Oasis' "Wonderwall" but I would not consider them for the greatest song list.
The first song I am naming for the list is "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. Written and recording in 1966 this song was the first songs to use the word God in the lyrics. When compared to other songs of 1966 "God Only Knows" stands outside the box. Other artists were blown away by it including Paul McCartney. The harmonies and lyrics stand out. 'The song ends with a series of repeating vocal rounds, another device that was uncommon for popular music of the era."
McCartney proclaimed that it was "the greatest song ever written" Granata 2004 page 227
Pete Townshend said, "'God Only Knows' is simple and elegant and was stunning when it first appeared; it still sounds perfect." Musicians on Brian Wilson 10/6/20
John Lennon, according to Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner, "said he really dug [the song] and the world perked up" Badman 2004 page 207
Barry Gibb said that it "blew the top of my head off ... My first thought was, oh dear, I'm wasting my time, how can I ever compete with that? We've [the Bee Gees] been competing with that ever since." Musicians on Brian Wilson 10/6/20
Bono remarked that the string arrangement was "fact and proof of angels." Musicians on Brian Wilson 10/6/20
