Artimus Pyle Celebrates 70 Rocking Years
Monday, July 30 – 8:00 p.m.- Artimus Pyle’s 70th Birthday Bash. Artimus Pyle, Thrawz Wobl, Chappell, Velvet Truck Stop, more. Rock. $8.
Unlike many of his Southern Rock contemporaries, former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer and Swannanoa resident Artimus Pyle is going strong. He’s celebrating his personal and musical longevity with a musical 70th birthday celebration at the White Horse Black Mountain on Monday, July 30 at 8:00 p.m. He’ll be joined for a rocking good time by gonzo “Jedi WyZyrd Space Music” band Thrawz Wobl, Chappelland Asheville’s Velvet Truck Stop, some of whose members have toured with Pyle for over ten years. Other surprise guest artists will also be on hand.
Artimus Pyle’s name is familiar to any classic rock fan as the powerful longtime drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, with whom he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he got his first big break playing at the Charlie Daniels Band’s Volunteer jam, which led to work with the Marshall Tucker Band and numerous studio sessions. He parlayed those connections into an introduction to Skynyrd ’s Ronnie VanZant and Ed King, and he made his recording debut with the band on the Saturday Night Specialalbum. He played for a while alongside original Skynyrd drummer Bob Burns, replacing him when Burns left the b and.
Since leaving Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1991 Pyle has fronted several incarnations of the Artimus Pyle Band and has lent his inimitable drumming talents to several groups in the Asheville area. In 2017 he published a memoir, Street Survivor: Keeping the Beat in Lynyrd Skynyrd,recounting his colorful life and times.
