Artimus Pyle, Parsippany, New Jersey, September 1974 I love this angry looking photo of Artimus. He had a mean look when he wanted to. And he used it too like he is here. When I use to be in the studio with Artimus and it was just he and I messing around in there, Artimus would run and jump on his drums and just explode into them. His concentration was intense and this same look would come over his face and he would look right straight at you with this glare and you would think he was directing it to you, but when I asked him about it he said he did not even realize he was doing it and said he may have been looking at me, but not seeing me because he was really concentrating on playing drums. I knew another drummer Michael Humphries of AMRA and KENDAL STASH who did the same thing. But there was another time Artimus liked to use this look and that was when he was on the prowl for a woman. Artimus would waltz into a club like a Marine storming the beach at Normandy. And he would look around the club for the most beautiful woman in the club and he would put this intense gaze upon her and keep it up until he got her attention. And he would keep staring at her while she would look at him, then away, then back... and Artimus did not care if she was with a man or not. Artimus first move on a woman in a club was this stare coming at her... It said "I want you now! And I'm taking you NOW!" Guess it was a rock star thing.

That could be anyone!
But even I recognize the Artimus underneath.
I can tell by how he stands- his shape- and how he carries himself at head and shoulders. Notice in this image his left leg is straight while his right leg is slightly leaning out. Even the blue jeans tell this story as the jeans on the left leg are flat and straight, while the jeans on the right leg are wavy and bunched up due to the shift in weight.
He shattered that right leg and has a steel pin in it from ankle to knee. It always hurts him especially with the pounding on drums he does nightly.
So when he stands like this, he shifts his upper body weight on the left leg and takes most of his weight off his right leg. He does this subconsciously now without even thinking about it.
The right leg is being used for balance only. And he is kind of pulling up on that leg in a photo like this one. Not only shifting weight to the left leg by pulling the weight off that pin under his right knee.
I have spent a lot of time around Artimus over the years. I have spent more time with him than any other band member. So I have watched him closely over the years to see how he reacts to his right leg on a daily basis, even moment by moment.
Artimus has to be very careful these days to not re-injure that right leg again because doctors have told him if he does it will come off at the knee. Amputation.
ADDED: Oh, and for Artimus this is a fashion snafu! He is wearing some serious high waters! Otherwise a great image of him. The only thing missing is his long hair flowing out the back.
Something else to look for when around Artimus is his shoes.
In this image I do not see an elevated sole to the right shoe since his right leg is now about one inch shorter than the left leg. So he has to make up the difference with the right shoe.
In the past I have seen him wearing shoes with the elevation addition glued onto the bottom of the shoe and visible on the outside. But in this image it appears he may have the wedge inside the shoe and, I don't see any elevation on the outside of these shoes. I would need to see a more clear close up of that right shoe and ankle.
This would mean of course, in the past Artimus had to pay for custom shoes to made for him. But today he may be able to get by with off the shelf shoes that he can simply put a wedge in under his heel.
This difference in leg length has changed the way he plays the drums today.
For example, before the injury to right leg he used a double-pedal kick drum set up. Meaing the left leg pounded the left kick drum, and the right leg pounded the right kick drum. Today he has to use a single foot pedal setup for dual kick drum operation with the left leg only. He has shifted his lower pounding to his good leg. And it has made a difference, but he works hard to keep up the pounding same as before so no one will notice on the other side of those drums.

That is an awesome looking new drum set! Way cool! And I see a dual snare setup. Kind of unusual...
